General Questions

Why should I visit the dentist regularly?
When patients make visits to our dentist regularly, they can enjoy better oral and dental health. Visit our office twice a year for cleanings and exams to catch early signs of gum disease or tooth decay. Call 02 8036 2411 to schedule with us today.
Why do I need to floss?
Flossing reaches and cleans areas in-between the teeth. If food particles and bacteria are allowed to build up here, it can lead to tooth decay and gum disease. Patients should take time to both brush and floss to keep their teeth healthy.
How often should I brush and floss?
You should take time to brush your teeth every day, especially in the evening. My Smile Doctors also recommend that patients make it a priority to floss at least once per day. Keeping up with these habits can keep your teeth and gums healthy throughout your lifetime.
How safe are dental X-rays?
Dental X-rays are designed to expose the patients to only safe levels of radiation — less than even sunlight. Each machine completes a safety check every two years. Some practices also use digital X-rays, which use even less radiation than traditional machines.

When will my baby start getting teeth?
The teeth start to develop within the gums before children are even born. However, it is normal for the teeth to appear above the gum line anywhere from six to ten months old.
Why are primary teeth important?
The baby teeth are called “primary teeth” because they are the first teeth appear in children. When parents take steps to make sure those teeth are healthy, it can help ensure the health of the child’s adult, or secondary, teeth. It can also help the child develop good dental hygiene habits that keep their teeth healthy as adults.
I’ve lost a tooth. What are my options for replacing it?

What is a root canal?
With root canals, dentists repair the inner structure of the tooth. These include the nerves, vessels and soft tissue that can become infected or otherwise damaged. To help stop the spread of infection and prevent further damage, our dentist may recommend an endodontic procedure, such as a root canal.
What is orthodontics?
Patients can enjoy straighter, healthier smiles through orthodontic treatments. Orthodontics gradually move crooked, gapped or otherwise misaligned teeth into the proper position for a healthy bite. While all orthodontists receive dental training, they do complete additional training following dental school.
When should my child receive their first orthodontic screening?
Usually, patients can first see come in for an orthodontic appointment around age seven. However, depending on the treatment and the child’s conditions, it may be advised that the patient start treatment at an older age. As the child ages, your dental professional can oversee the development of your child’s teeth.
Am I too old for orthodontic treatment?
While many people assume that orthodontics is only available for children and teens, many adults undergo orthodontic treatment as well. Whatever your age, our office can help you achieve a straighter, more beautiful smile.
What is a periodontal disease?
Also known as gum disease, periodontal issues affect the gum and soft tissue that surround the teeth. Many people are affected by mild forms of periodontal disease (gingivitis). However, if the disease is allowed to progress it can spread and cause tooth, bone or gum loss.
What causes periodontal disease?
When bacteria builds up into plaque and tarter, they can cause gum disease. If left untreated, it can start to erode tissue, irritate the gums and cause the soft tissue to form “pockets” that can house more bacteria deposits.
What are the symptoms of periodontal disease?
There are many signs of gum disease, depending on the progress of the disease. First, patients may notice that their gums bleed easily, are swollen, red or inflamed. Gums can then start to pull away from the teeth and form periodontal pockets. In later stages, pustules and sores can develop. Patients may also suffer from bad breath, shifting of the teeth or tooth loss.
What do I do if I have bad breath?
There are many different treatments for halitosis or bad breath. The condition can be caused by poor hygiene, tobacco use, dental appliances, skipping meals, periodontal disease or other illnesses. Depending on the cause of your symptoms, our doctor may recommend additional brushing or flossing, avoiding tobacco products, increasing your water intake or using an oral rinse. Come in and see our dentist in Parramatta, Sydney and have them examine your mouth and recommend a treatment.
